De Finse coureur bracht vijf seizoenen door bij Mercedes. Hij kwam bij de Silver Arrows na vier jaar bij Williams als vervanger van 2016-wereldkampioen Nico Rosberg. Met Mercedes won hij tien races en behaalde hij twee vice-kampioenstitels. Voor 2021 besloot Mercedes zijn junior George Russell op te roepen bij Williams, waardoor Bottas moest vertrekken. Dit wordt zijn tweede seizoen bij Alfa Romeo.
